SCA teaches the British National Primary School Curriculum, starting from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS, approximately 2 years old), all the way up to grade Seven (up to approximately 13 years old). The British curriculum is globally recognised by more than 160 countries as an ambitious, high quality, modern world curriculum with a proven heritage.
Starting from January 2023, the curriculum is delivered through the engaging and structured lesson blocks of the Hamilton Trust. Hamilton Trust is a highly respected British non-profit organisation founded in 1988 to support inspirational teaching and learning through its high-quality teaching resources. Hamilton’s expert team of experienced teachers, subject specialists, writers and editors ensure the highest standards of quality, consistency and pedagogy throughout their teaching materials, used by thousands of schools and tens of thousands of teachers in the UK and worldwide.
Subjects taught are: English, Mathematics, Science, Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education.
The language of instruction at SCA is English.
Portuguese is taught as first foreign language from Key Stage 1 – year One.
In addition to the international curriculum, pupils are also taught Geography and History from the Mozambican National Curriculum.
During the first term of the school year, Swimming is taught in the large, beautiful pool of Vilanculos Beach Lodge. The term is finished off by the Swimming Gala, a full day event for the whole Vilankulo community. Pupils participate in the weekly swimming lessons from Reception year.
During the second term, the winter term, Athletics (track and field) is taught at our on-premises sports field. The term is finished off by a friendly inter-school competition, again a full day filled with fun activities, parent races, snacks and drinks.
During the last term of the school year Drama and Art take a front seat and throughout the term pupils work zealously towards their year-end musical performance. All pupils participate and ongoing preparations fill the term with joyful singing, dancing and creative set design. The play is performed ‘under the stars’ and is a much enjoyed evening for the whole community.
Other special events in the school year are World Wildlife Day, World Book Day, Mozambican Children’s Day, the SCA annual community Volleyball Tournament and World (Beach) Cleanup Day.
The school year runs from January to December, and is divided into three terms. Term breaks approximately coincide with the months of April, August and December/January.
School days start at 7:30 and finish at 13:15. Optionally, pupils can register to enjoy a cooked lunch after school and take part in extra-curricular afternoon activities. The activities vary from term to term, but may include Chess, Taekwondo, Hockey, Art and Ball Skills. Pupils from other schools often join in to participate!
Mindfulness, creativity and conservation are emphasised throughout the curriculum.
The school is located in the heart of the world-famous Bazaruto Seascape, home to Mozambique’s first Marine National Park, Bazaruto National Marine Park, where protected, iconic species such as dugongs flourish.
Whenever the opportunity arises, local and visiting experts such as marine biologists, are invited to the school for guest lessons with the pupils. They inspire pupils by sharing of their work. Pupils also expand their horizons on field trips in Vilankulo town its beautiful beaches and the islands of the national park.
